KUCINICH CUTS THROUGH MINOR DEBATES WITH PROPOSALS FOR FUNDAMENTAL CHANGE

[November 27, 2003]

While other candidates at yesterday's presidential debate, which aired on MSNBC, traded charges and accusations over slim differences of policy, Dennis Kucinich presented a clear contrast and fundamentally different solutions. Dennis cut through the debate about cuts in Medicare by pointing out that as long as private insurance companies are left in control costs will continue to spiral out of control. Kucinich's plan for single-payer universal health care (HR 676) would provide comprehensive health care for every American and cost less in a tax on employers than employers who provide coverage currently pay on average.

Dennis pointed to the need to address basic economic issues, the kind of issues that parents talk about at the kitchen table, the issues that unite people across regions and across races. He cited his proposals for a full employment economy, single-payer health care, free college tuition, and the creation of affordable housing. Dennis made clear that other candidates' talk of modifying NAFTA is little more than talk, that modifying NAFTA will prove virtually impossible because of the WTO. Kucinich has promised to make his first act in office replacing NAFTA and the WTO with new bilateral trade agreements based on workers' rights, human rights, and environmental quality principles.

The debate about Iraq made clear that Dennis Kucinich has been the strongest opponent of the War on Iraq and the Occupation of Iraq. Congressman Gephardt cited Gov. Dean's record of support for the war and the occupation. Tom Brokaw cited Gen. Clark's similar record. Kucinich presented his plan to bring U.S. troops home and turn control over to the United Nations. He challenged the other candidates to join him. As Gov. Dean said, only Dennis Kucinich had the courage to vote against the war. Dean also said that he opposed the $87 billion. But in a debate aired live on CNN on Oct. 10, 2003, Kucinich challenged Dean on the $87 billion and the occupation, and Dean said he supported it. Prior to yesterday's debate, MSNBC's Chris Matthews dismissed Dennis Kucinich as less than a serious candidate. The debate proved Dennis to be the most serious candidate.

For several months now I’ve been very much involved with a volunteer committee to set up a small, but important event that took place this past Friday, November 21st. The sold-out event was called “Bringing Vision Back Into Politics” and featured Congressman Dennis Kucinich. The event was held at The Kaye Playhouse in the Hunter College complex in Manhattan. Also featured that evening was James Schamus [producer of the film Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon], Barbara Ehrenreich [author of “Nichel & Dimed”], Angela Gilliam [writer/professor] and musical group “Harbor of Refuge”. I arrived just after 7pm to help staff the Kucinich materials/pamphlets tables. All the items were free and I enjoyed conversing with many folk on Dennis and politics. Unfortunately Dennis could not be with us in person that evening. This was due to Congress extending its session in DC on Energy and Medicare bills. He’s a very committed person to the issues. The evening before the event he’d done up a video of himself speaking on many important issues. Issues that concern ALL us Americans and that are being destroyed by the Bush Empire. The audience really got pumped from watching and listening to this video. The young rock band "Harbor of Refuge" performed two songs. Then Ehrenreich and Gilliam interviewed Dennis via “modern technology”, as there was an “intermission” in Congress. Great hearing Dennis speak “in real time” … plus handle the questions with honesty and integrity. This man firmly stands by everything he believes in and doesn’t change his “spots” like Howard Dean. I greatly enjoyed the short, but dynamic evening and being with other like-minded individuals.

The Republican National Committee is paying attention to Dennis Kucinich's leadership against the war and occupation, and has launched a TV ad aimed at frightening people. It begins with President Bush saying "It would take one vial, one canister, one crate slipped into this country to bring a day of horror like none we have ever known."

Here's what Dennis said yesterday in response: "The Republican National Committee is using money that derives largely from the wealthiest few in America to pay for advertisements aimed at keeping all Americans scared. We will not be frightened into submission. We will not forget the lies we were told about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. We will not forget that Iraq had nothing to do with 9-11. We will remember that for the hundreds of billions we are spending on an unjust and destabilizing occupation in Iraq, we could have an investment in American education that would include free pre-kindergarten and free college tuition. We need to get our priorities straight and not give in to the fear-mongering. I offer America the hope of a new approach and a clear choice in the next election." VOTE FOR KUCINICH ... HE IS THE RIGHT CHOICE!!!!

DVD PROVES PEARL'S GREATNESS

Pearl Jam's new DVD proves that the band deserves mention alongside other legendary rock acts such as The Who and Led Zeppelin. Pearl Jam no longer sounds like the band dozens of others have copied since its 1991 debut, "TEN." Nor does Pearl Jam fly around the stage like crazed hummingbirds anymore.

What Pearl Jam does do on their new DVD, "Live at the Garden" (recorded July 8 at Madison Square Garden), however, is prove it's one of the greatest rock bands in the world. Not to take anything away from other bands that can make great music in the studio and on stage, but Pearl Jam runs the gamut of musical extremes.

"Live" (4 stars of 4) gives fans a slew of punk rockers like "Save You" and "Last Exit," the sailor song "I Am Mine" and some soft, melodic tunes like "Black" and straight-forward rock songs like "Faithful."

What truly makes this DVD special are the close-ups of the band as well as special guest appearance by the Buzzcocks and Ben Harper, who walks out on stage as Pearl Jam's lead vocalist Eddie Vedder adds Harper's "My Own Two Hands" to the end of "Daughter."

But what's most impressive about "Live" is the sound. It's powerful, challenging, fearless and explosive — and a more accurate representation of a Pearl Jam concert than any one of the 72 CDs of the concerts the band performed this year. Since Pearl Jam decided to step out of the spotlight by refusing to make videos, award-show appearances or music that caters to specific rock radio formats, they've secured their place among the greatest bands in rock history.

Don't believe me? At one point on "Live," Vedder tells the audience the band was frightened during their song "Do the Evolution," because the stage was shaking. A Madison Square Garden official then walks up to Vedder and says that's only happened three other times — once during a Grateful Dead concert, another during an Iron Maiden performance and once during a Bruce Springsteen concert.

Unlike the band's Florida performances earlier this year, which seemed to lack energy and precision, Pearl Jam is tight and flawless in its execution on stage at MSG. Covers of Mother Love Bone's "Crown of Thorns" and The Who's "Baba O'Riley" are played to perfection. And Vedder's singing and smoking during "Crazy Mary" is sure to conjure up images of, dare I say, Frank Sinatra.

While grunge-lite bands like the Stone Temple Pilots, Bush, Creed, Staind and Nickelback have become stars by ripping off the Pearl Jam sound found on "TEN," Pearl Jam has evolved into something much more than the Seattle sound of the early 1990s. They're true rock musicians who deserve a place right alongside rock gods such as Neil Young, The Who and Led Zeppelin.

This past weekend I enjoyed a nice, long visit down in the DC/VA area and stayed with high school friend Nancie. Took the Friday off from work as a personal day. Unfortunately the weather and Amtrak wasn’t cooperating that Friday morning … causing delays from 10 to 40 minutes. Train was supposed to depart Penn Station at 9:35am and we finally left NYC at 10:15am. The ride down was for the most part uneventful. The woman sitting next to me either slept or read. As for myself, I listened to my CD Walkman or read THE NATION periodical. Finally arrived into Union Station just before 2pm and Nancie was waiting for me at gate. We decided not to visit Mt Vernon that afternoon, due to lateness of Amtrak. Hung out at her house [hubby Tim was visiting their daughter in upstate NY], ate fruit, talked, then went shopping for groceries and ended up at Tyson’s Corner Mall. Before doing some Xmas shopping at the Mall we had a tasty dinner at Rainforest Café. [We discussed, in detail, plans for our 30th high school reunion in 2007.] Later on at the house we utilized the Jacuzzi / hot tub in backyard. Love it!

Next day had a leisurely breakfast before heading into FairOaks and Nancies office. She had paperwork to do and one of her co-workers gave me a full body massage. Damn that felt good! Kim, the masseuse, told me about this wonderful Xmas Shop near the office that Nancie and I should check out, which we did afterwards. The day was wearing on, plus we were getting hungry for lunch, so headed south towards Mt Vernon. Kim told us the restaurant there serves a yummy peanut soup. We first headed into Alexandria [beautiful town], promptly got lost, inquired at Visitors Center and finally arrived to Mt Vernon around 2pm. Of course the next bit I’ve already documented a few days ago [see 11/17/03]. After a quick bite to eat we drove over to Woodlawn Estate and Plantation, which is across ridge from George Washington’s Mt Vernon. It’s a smaller estate, but has lots of charm and isn’t as crowded as Georgie’s place. This suited us just fine and we spent several hours. The tour of the mansion was delightful and so informative. The property nicely landscaped with the aroma of boxwood in the air. Heavenly! Back in Nancie’s van we headed north to do some holiday shopping at FairOaks Mall, then had a delicious dinner at a Thai restaurant. Back at the house I made calls to Mom and Katherine relating the “Tracey encounter”. Then its off to the hot tub / Jacuzzi to relax the muscles. Throughout most of the day Nancie was ill with a nasty cough and she was slowly losing her voice. On Sunday she was reduced to whispering, poor thing.

We went to IHOP for pumpkin pancake breakfast, my treat. After partaking of a yummy meal at IHOP we drove to Fairfax High School to check out the huge excellent art/craft show. We spent over two hours at the show, sometimes going separately to cover more turf. Thru Nancie I was able to meet several friends of hers who were selling their items, two of the chaps are from the alternate rock band THE FURS. They'll be playing some gigs up in NYC in the new year and we exchanged email addresses. It was all very enjoyable and I had some terrific conversations with several artisans. Nancie showed me their previous house, which they’d been renting out since 1997 and have now sold it. Its in a nice, working class neighborhood … one level with garage and sitting on ¼ acre of land. We also checked out a place that sells British goodies and has a tea room. Next year we’ll go to the tea room, as this time it was booked solid. So we ended up in Fairfax eating a late lunch at a Chinese Buffet. Lots of good food, especially the stringbeans, for a reasonable price. We rounded off the afternoon by heading back into DC. I decided to take the 5:20pm Amtrak instead of the 6:20pm, so we hung out at the station in a cafe. The ride back to NYC was uneventful and I slept half the time.

Will relate my long weekend visit to DC/VA shortly, but first abit of a tidbit from that weekend [Saturday]. Or, as my friend Nancie says, it was "weird stuff". I was visiting my friend Nancie and we both used to know this gal name Tracey. Many legit reasons why we're no longer friends with this individual and her family. Those stories are for another time. Basically Tracey only knows how to do waitressing, as she's never done anything else [married since Dec 1981 to an Air Force man] and her years of college now seem a waste. Anyhow ... who'd have thought she'd be working in the nice restaurant, which is part of the Mt Vernon estate. Neither Nancie or I, that's for damn sure. We got to Mt Vernon Saturday afternoon at 2pm and were hungry for some lunch. Figured we'd eat a quick bite before touring George Washington's beloved home. I might add its quite a busy place. One of Nancie's co-workers told us that the restaurant [not the food court] serves a delicious peanut soup. We walk in to find a bar with seating to the right & in back. Gal at the bar says we have to go around the bar, to the left and up some stairs to be seated properly in restaurant. It was as I'm heading towards the stairs that I recognize Tracey looking down at some "checks". [Hadn't seen her since 1996.] My whole system jolts and I keep on walking past her and up the stairs. Nancie is behind me the whole time. Tracey must of looked up after I pasted her [I never said a word] and saw Nancie. I heard her say behind me ... "Nancie!" ... I vaguely hear Nancie reply "Oh My God!!!". Nancie dislikes her as much as I do, ever since Tracey invited herself and children to Sam's [Nancie & Tims son] bar mitzvah back in early to mid 1990s. Typical of Tracey, thinks she's being cute, but is actually terribly rude. Anyhow, her daughter Connie took all the disposable cameras home with her from the bar mitzvah. She even admitted it to Nancie! Yet when Nancie called Tracey a day later, she gets shit from Tracey and never saw those cameras [with pix of son's bar mitzvah] ever again. I remember Tracey telling me about it and I was upset. [She thought it funny. Stupid bitch] Told Tracey off big time, said she should of done the honorable thing and fessed up, plus send the camera's back to Nancie. Okay ... enough of that ... so I keep walking [and shaking] until I get to Mt Vernon gift shop, turn around and Nancie is pulling up the rear. Nancie told me after she uttered OMG! she kept on walking too and never looked back. We're both upset and saying ... "lets get the hell out of here" ... stood there debating cause we were so hungry. So finally we said "screw it, lets eat at food court near gift shop and then leave". The food court is very much separate from the restaurant. After a quick lunch of crab cake sandwiches, french fries & bottled water, we left Mt Vernon to tour another plantation/estate. [Woodlawn -- which we greatly enjoyed.] It took over an hour for my darn nerves to calm down. Both Nancie and I agreed Tracey looked like crap. Too many years of sitting in the sun [tanning], bad eating habits, dysfunctional married life and not taking care of oneself does take a toll. She's only two years older than me. So, there you have it in a nutshell.

Today, in the mail at work, I received a wonderful parcel of Pearl Jam goodies from sweet and thoughtful Kim in Michigan. WooHoo! Rock on girl! It consisted of the new CD called LOST DOGS, which is of the bands rarities, plus a very detailed RIOT ACT tour 2003 journal by Kim herself. [ie: photos, setlists, etc] Back in June she saw the band four times in concert with Josee, Liam and Melissa. All buddies from the Yahoo Group IRWTpt2. I am touched and honored to receive a copy of this journal. Thank you Kim!

While still on subject of Pearl Jam, there is this young [probably mid 20s] chap who rides my subway in the AM and believe me he looks alot like sexy Jeff Ament [PJ bass player]. Only difference is he's younger than Jeff and his hair is fashioned into dreadlocks. Woooof!

Just when I think I’m getting ahead of things … I get another setback in the health department. Geez! Yesterday, while at my desk working, I received another setback. It was going on 11:30am that I felt piercing lower right back spasms. This was similar to what I went thru in May 1999, but not as severe and on left side. Difference this time is that I’m working for a company with very good health benefits and flexibility. Anyhow, the spasms are doing there thing, so I head off to restroom to stretch in hopes of “working out kinks”. No such luck … damn. Head back to desk to call my chiropractor and make an appointment before he left office at 1pm. The man has short office hours on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Got a hold of the office and they said to get there by or before 12:30pm, which meant I had to leave ASAP. Left message with one of my bosses and secretary who sits next to me. Hauled ass out of office at 11:45am. Took two subways and got to chiropractor office in my neighborhood at 12:25pm. Was set up in a room for Dr Abott to examine me, then I received heat therapy and finally adjustments. Doc wanted me to take remainder of afternoon off from work and rest. I was still feeling pain and soreness in the lower back, but he assured me I’d be 100% within 4 to 7 days. I'm scheduled for a one-hour, full body massage appointment on Saturday morning and it'll work wonders. Plus, I'm also visiting friends down in the DC/VA area and be able to utilize their hottub/jaccuzzi too. That will be so sweet and so relaxing. So my chiropractor typed a note for work, I headed home, called the office to leave detailed voicemails and relaxed rest of day. [Also did hot/cold therapy for afflicted area.] While resting I caught up on reading, plus writing in my ferret shelter journal. Took a nap and watch some telly. Now I’m back to work and the back is feeling abit better today. Tonight is the Kucinich volunteer/committee meeting at 6pm, which I’ll only attend for a short spell, then head home to take it easy.

Just learned that the secretary I'm covering for here at E&Y will be out until early January. [She's extending her maturnity leave - without pay.] That means my floater assignment has been extended. [Hurray!] I've been in this spot since early August and I'm working for a terrific group.

This past Thursday evening was another Kucinich Volunteer Meetup here in Manhattan. It was held in a funky back room of the 11th Street Bar in the East Village. Sadly it was abit of a cool, wet evening and I arrived 1/2 hour late, as I'd been uptown at a workout session with Personal Trainer. The meetup lasted roughly two hours and a few things were accomplished. One of which is that we raised over $90 in campaign contributions. Yeah! Other notes ... Rob J made announcements, many spoke of why they are passionate supporters of Kucinich and finally groups were formed in discussions of Delegates/ Petitioners. [Only sour note of the evening was a brief, heated debate on abortion issues.] I offered to contact those who attended the meetup, via email, of the upcoming Kucinich event on November 21st, plus send Yahoo Group URL. This I took care of upon arriving home after the meetup. I'm also responsible for sending out the advertising, on November 21st event, to different websites. Such as WBAI, WNYC, United for Peace & Justice, MoveOn.Org and so on. Past week or so has been not only busy at work [E&Y], but with this political volunteer stuff. It feels great to be part of something like this and meeting so many cool, like-minded folk.

Today is Election Day! As a New York resident, I'm writing to urge you to go to the polls and vote NO on Question 3. [I did earlier this AM.] Since this is an off-year election, we'll need every last vote to make sure that Mayor Bloomberg and wealthy Republicans don't eliminate party primaries in New York.

If Bloomberg's proposal goes through, minority voters would lose influence in city elections, the city's landmark campaign finance program would be hamstrung, and voters would lose the opportunity to pick their own party's candidates for the general election. In practice, this system will mean a shift in power to the wealthy and the Republican party.

It's not often that we agree with the New York Post editorial pages, but the Post is just one of a number of newspapers who oppose the initiative. The New York Times, Newsday, The New York Sun, and The New York Amsterdam Sun also have written editorials opposing it. As the New York Times editorial observed, "it is telling that the mayor has not been able to garner much support for this proposal and has found himself opposed by every major good-government group." (Editorial, 10/29/03) Those good-government groups include the League of Women Voters, Common Cause NY and NYPIRG.

Despite this strong opposition, the fate of ballot Question 3 will be determined by a few votes. That's because Mayor Bloomberg is bankrolling a massive mail blitz to get this ballot measure adopted. Last week The Amsterdam News called a brochure mailed by the Mayor's campaign committee deceptive, because it featured misleading quotes that suggested the paper supports non-partisan elections, when in fact it does not.

Please go to the polls today and vote NO on Question 3. Also, please ask your friends and colleagues to vote NO as well. Thank you!

I feel so jazzed and energized when I go through [or experience] a terrific, productive weekend. Plus the weather was so sunny and warm. What is known as an Indian Summer. Love it! I've always been more intuned with the Spring and Autumn seasons.

Most of the weekend was very good and positive, plus some upsetting news. Before going into the "jazzed" stuff ... I'd called Mom early Sunday AM [before going out to view the Marathon] and she told me she'd fractured her right ankle late Saturday afternoon outside the house. [Also bruised her right knee in the fall.] I'm referring to my parents home in upstate NY. Dad was at the golf course and Mom couldn't get up or pull herself onto the front porch. [Thankfully the weather was comfortable and dry.] Fortunately there was someone visiting my Uncle Bob next door. He saw Mom as he was leaving, went back into Uncle Bob's house and they both came over to help out. Whew! My father was called, he came home and took Mom to the emergency room. I did call my parents around 6:30pm Saturday evening and left a voicemail. Mom said she was still at the hospital in VT. Doctor says it'll take several weeks or so to heal properly and she's got to rest alot right now. I told her I could take some time off from work to come up and help out. Mom said it wasn't necessary, as there were family and friends up that way to help out.

Saturday was my monthly visit to ferret shelter in Yonkers. On the way to Grand Central Station via subway [the G line to be exact] ... me and all the other passengers in our particular car were gazing in wonder, awe and mirth at a male passenger. He looked to be dressed in the remains of a Halloween costume, that resembled something out of the 1970s. It wasn't so much the outfit or funky sunglasses, but the huge [and I mean huge] afro he was sporting. I haven't seen one like that in 25 years! You could barely seen his face. It was a sight to see and even a 2 year old in a nearby stroller was gawking at him. On the 12:20pm Metro North train to Yonkers I was reading my new book, "One Minute for Myself". One of the quotes it mentioned was ... "In one minute I can change my attitude, and in that minute I can change my entire day". So very true ... powerful, yet simple stuff. So, during the last 10 minutes or so of the train journey, I let happy thoughts slowly weave through my head and gazed at the Palisades. The Fall Foliage was at its height in color; with lots of golden yellow, brunt orange and glimpses of maroon. Sparingly dotted along the Hudson River were sailboats drifting on the water. Lovely, peaceful sights to behold.

Aliza picked me up at the train station in her new, second-hand car [Volvo] and we chatted on drive to Joanne's. Briana was at home getting over a cold. Poor darling. When we arrived Joanne was outside attempting to clear up the Halloween decor in the front yard. I took some pix ... as its all really cool looking. Aliza couldn't stay long to chat ... but had to run home to her daughter. In the house and shelter Joanne and I caught up on news et al. She told me the shelter is running at full capacity with 30 furkids. Over next two hours I took care of two groups of 8 to 10 furkids. One of them was dear, little Fuzzbutt who has an enlarged spleen. I gave him lots of loving cuddles and extra FerreVite. He'd nap for awhile in a sleep sack and then follow me around the shelter while I did my duties. Every so often I'd pick him up for more cuddles and he gave me a kiss [licked my nose]. Such a good boy. These new shelter additions weren't familiar with the poopy paper routine, so I'd be cleaning up "accidents" all over the place. Had a tea break with Joanne and we talked about relationships with men. Back in the shelter I took all the waterbottles and filled with fresh water, cleaned up poopy papers, put away toys and mopped the floors down. Then it was time to freshen up, change clothes and had back to train station. It was a good day!

Sunday found me taking care of many fun projects, household chores, cooking pasta sauce from scratch, as well as viewing the annual NYC Marathon which runs [ahem, pardon the pun] through my neighborhood. My long distance phone service is working again ... Hurray ... so I was able to make calls. While out in the early evening doing my "power walk", I bumped into a fellow Kucinich volunteer [Michael] I know from meetings. We had a fascinating conversation on several topics and he'll be at the upcoming Meetup. It was a damn good weekend and I was following some of the principals of "One Minute For Myself". I highly recommend this book to others.

Last weekend when I was visiting my good friend Katherine in CT ... we stopped by a tag sale near the IHOP. And now for something completely different ... a non-political moment. [Hum ... do I hear deep sighs of relief from many of you? Well, you know I'll bring the conversation around to that subject sometime down the road. (smiling)]

This past weekend I had a lovely time visiting two friends of mine. Was up in southern CT on Saturday and in a different part of Brooklyn on Sunday.

Coordinating a visit with my good friend Katherine takes some planning and whether she'll have free weekend time from Wal-Mart. She is still relatively new at Wal-Mart, so her weekend options are next to nil. Katherine sent me an email a week or so in advance, stating that October 25th was free and clear. Hurray! We were fortunate in being blessed with a nice, comfortable Autumn day and no rain. To condense the visit into a nutshell ... took her to brunch at IHOP [ate some yummy pumpkin pancakes], went shopping [didn't buy a thing, but fun to look] at two really nice stores [Home Goods & Trader Joes], stopped by cemetery to tend my grammies grave, had pumpkin ice cream at Carvel and then stopped by to see her fiancee Maurice working on their new home. It'll be a nice place when its finished and situated not far from the train station. Sweet! Katherine and Maurice are hoping to get married sometime in late December. Can't wait! Katherine also filled me in on the latest news concerning her two daughters and ex-hubby. Some of the news was good, but much of it was upsetting.

On the train ride back to NYC there were lots of folk onboard wearing Yankee items. They were going to game six of the World Series that evening at the stadium. I had a strong feeling the Marlins would win the series that very night. And they did! I guess you can tell I'm not a Yankee fan. Your right ... I always cheer on the underdog. I'm more of a NY Mets fan. Was happy to see another team win other than the arrogant, over-paid Yankees.

Sunday afternoon I was invited over for lunch to Anni's home in southwestern Brooklyn. I'd visited her families home back in March, not only for a tasty lunch, but to see her 2 month old daughter Rachel. Same thing this time, only Rachel is going on 9 months old and is one happy baby. [Learned her oldest brother, his wife and children have moved to California.] Had a lovely visit, enjoyed partaking of some yummy Indian food, chatting with Anni [& family] and playing with her daughter Rachel. [Such a sweet, cute, lovely temperment, happy child.] Haven't seen Anni since I moved from E&Ys Broad Street to their Times Square location, which was back in mid to late July. So we caught up on news, work stuff and gossip. This coming weekend I'm heading up to ferret shelter to do my beloved volunteer work and then watch the NYC Marathon. Yeah!

On October 25th, supporters of Congressman Dennis Kucinich's bid for the presidency participated in marches and rallies around the country, including in Washington D.C. and San Francisco, organized by United for Peace and Justice and intended to advance the cause of bringing U.S. troops home from Iraq. Busloads of Kucinich supporters made their way to D.C. and handed out flyers in a crowd containing many Kucinich signs, banners, and T-shirts.

Congressman Kucinich himself phoned in to WPFW, the radio station airing the DC event, and expressed his support for the cause on the air. Kucinich also wrote remarks which were read on stage at the DC event by Rev. Osagyefo Uhuru Sekou, the Kucinich campaign's National Director of Community Outreach and New Voter Development. The remarks follow:

REMARKS FROM CONGRESSMAN DENNIS J. KUCINICH:

"I wish I could have been with you today, as I have been with you in marches against this war over the past many months, including the powerful march in New York last February. I am campaigning for President, which required me today to speak out against this occupation at a forum with other candidates rather than with you where my heart is, rather than with you in Washington, D.C., a city that I intend to see become a STATE in the very near future. Today I spoke at an AFL-CIO forum in New Hampshire urging labor to get behind ending the occupation.

"It was a year ago February that I gave a speech titled "A Prayer for America" that flooded my office with Emails, letters, and phone calls asking me to run for President. In that speech I protested the Bush Administration's build-up to war, and I have continued to oppose that war unwaveringly and do so still today, because this war has been declared

"Two) The UN must handle the awarding of all contracts - no more Halliburton sweetheart deals. No more war profiteering by Republican contributors and Bush Administration cronies. "Third) The UN must work to create conditions for Iraqi self governance.

"It is time for the United States to rejoin the world community in the interests of international security. I am running for President to completely change the direction of US foreign and domestic policy. I plan to cut the bloated Pentagon budget by 15 percent and use the money for universal pre-school. I plan to establish a cabinet-level Department of
Peace to make nonviolence an organizing principle in our foreign and domestic affairs.

"If those of you who share these goals join this campaign, help us organize door-to-door and over the phone lines, we will win the Democratic nomination and give the American people a real choice in next year's election, a reason to vote, an opportunity to make this country a leader in peace, not war. And it will be the war profiteers who have to gather in
a small corner of this great space and hold a protest, because the White House will be closed to them. Thanks you."

Yesterday evening had a damn good one-hour session at the gym with my Personal Trainer. Certain muscles are pretty sore today. Whenever we have a session, Jamie and I always chat about current events, movies or personal stuff. Depends on the mood, I guess. Jamie's a terrific person, funny, considerate and a good trainer.

Also, the other day, I had to arrange an important meeting for a Partner I work for at E&Y. Required contacting the secretary of Partner from another firm to get things in sync, which we did. Anyhow, a 5 minute conversation turned into an enjoyable one hour conversation on a number of topics. Joan and I have several things in common, one of which is we both lived at Ten Eyck Womens Residence on East 39th Street. I lived there back in the early to mid 1980s and she's been living there for last 10 years. Good location and great views from the roof garden. That brought back memories. Joan is very much into theater, an actress and a romance writer. Back about 15 to 10 years ago I was very much into reading Regency style romance novels, as well as going to Broadway shows. Overall we had lots of fun talking, with many laughs, plus exchanged email addresses.

The word Democracy means literally "by the people." This is the basis of our government and society. It is what this country was founded upon and what makes us American. It is not just our "right" but also our duty to speak out and voice our thoughts and opinions. How, then, was it possible that, in the land of freedom, those who opposed the common opinion were called"un-American?" Resentfully, we wonder.

Who is to say what is or isn't "patriotic?" Do the flags that wave from every minivan really offer any support? Where is the support for the thousands of service men and women who return to the states to see their benefits cut, their health problems ignored, their jobs gone and their families living in poverty? How are they repaid for their efforts; for risking or losing their lives? So far, dismally.

The Governor of California was removed from office based on finance troubles. And yet George W Bush has lied to us, failed to keep our own borders secure, entered a war under false pretense, endangered lives, and created financial chaos. How is it that he hasn't been recalled? Perhaps this time we could even have a REAL election . . . but that wouldn't fit the Bush administration's "take what you want and fire people later" policy. Take an election; take an oil field; take advantage of your own people -- a game of political Three-Card Monte.

The fight for freedom in this country has been long, painful, and ongoing. It is time to take back our country. Take it back from political agendas, corporate greed and overall manipulation. It is time to take action here in our land, in our own schools, neighborhoods, farms, and businesses. We have been lied to AND terrorized by our own government, and it is time to take action. Now is the time to come together.

The Congressional Research Service issued a report yesterday showing that the funding bills already passed provide enough funding to continue the occupation of Iraq and protect the troops until spring of next year. Congress could have taken the time to properly debate and analyze the request, but Congressional Republicans wanted to rush the request through in order to limit the political damage.

And U.S. companies are charging taxpayers exorbitant rates for reconstruction -- $50,000 per bed, for example, for new Iraqi prisons, which is more than twice what we pay on average here.

Two days ago Jonathan Meier, age 20, departed Portland, Maine, on a coast-to-coast walk to raise awareness for Dennis Kucinich's presidential campaign. He and a group of local supporters headed down Route 1 towards New Hampshire. Volunteers from 24 states have already committed to joining in portions of the walk when it reaches their regions.

At a kickoff event in Portland, Jonathan delivered an eloquent speech. He said, "I walk because people need to know -- people deserve to know that Dennis John Kucinich is running for President in 2004! I am walking to let people know that now is the time for us to act. This is the moment that will change the course of history, because this is the moment that people decided to come together for one grand cause - the cause of global peace."

Abit of light-hearted news ... this past Saturday I visited the Bronx Zoo for the first time. I've been living in NYC for 20 years and figured its about time. Right? Well ... yeah ... plus the company I work for ... E&Y ... generously gave its employees "free admission" to the zoo on October 18th/19th. All we had to do was show our E&Y Photo ID at the gate and they let us waltz in. Hell yeah, that works for me! Only thing not included was rides, events and food. [As to the latter, bring your own, cause they are overpriced.] Those we had to pay for separately, but it was worth it. The subway ride up to the zoo took an hour longer than usual, due to construction work being done on several subway lines. Pain in the ass! Finally arrived about 2pm and stayed for almost three hours. The weather was a typical Fall day with some sun, a few clouds and brisk. I actually needed gloves to go with my turtleneck and heavy sweater. Whew! Anyhow ... I paid the fee to ride on Bengali Express Monorail and Skyfari East. Both of which I greatly enjoyed. The zoo grounds are quite large and nicely maintained. Also visited Asia Plaza, Monkey House, Zoo Center, Tiger Mountain, plus a view a slew of animals. I have to admit the Snow Leopards were my fav. They are so exquisite with beautiful fur and markings. I highly recommend it to all to visit the Bronx Zoo and spend a fun afternoon. Wish I had more time to visit the Botanical Gardens, just north of the zoo, but sadly that will have to wait another day.

Local news coverage has been decent, with perhaps millions of new people learning about our campaign. Along the way, Dennis was joined and supported by such well-known figures as Ani DiFranco, Studs Terkel, Mimi Kennedy and Dr. Patch Adams.

EXCITING $$ NEWS

Unlike other campaigns that are in decline, the Kucinich campaign today announced an increase in fundraising -- $1.65 million this quarter (up from last quarter's $1.54 million). We raised nearly $1 million in September alone! With an average donation of $72, the vast majority of our funds will be federally matched. A chunk of September's funds came from the Peace Day parties, showing that house party fundraising plus Internet fundraising is the wave of the future. As a grassroots campaign with a huge volunteer base, Kucinich for President doesn't need to equal other campaigns dollar for dollar.

Oh happy, happy ... joy, joy! I finally was able to purchase the Pearl Jam CD of their Boston3 show [July 11, 2003]. Can't wait to listen to it this evening after I get a manicure and go grocery shopping. Speaking of nails, I ran into my old manicurist of mine yesterday evening, on way home via subway. Rosita now works for a chic salon on Jackson Avenue in Queens. I'll swing by there Saturday and check out the facilities. She used to work for this salon that I frequented near Rockefeller Center several years ago, when I worked in that area. Yesterday I chatted with my friends Larry and Katherine on the phone. Just catching up on news, gossip and stuff in general.

What is it with men [some, not all] these days on Yahoo IM?!? Friends tell me its my "handle" and I should change it. Yeah, their so right. How can I feel like a "sexybroad" when assholes on IM ask me if I'm "on the rag", "watch them jerk off on webcam" or have an "anger problem". Okay, I admit I sometimes have an "anger problem". But when dealing with some morons on Yahoo IM its understandable to get abit peeved. Certain world events, boyfriend stuff, work situation, money matters anger me too. I've been meaning to take up yoga again to help things along. Maybe get a "self-help" book on how to deal with or channel that "anger". An ex-boss of mine said to me years ago ... "don't sweat the small stuff" and he's right. Tho sometimes its easier said than done. As to the "boyfriend stuff", I haven't heard from Rob since Thursday and quite frankly I don't care if I do. [Tho I'll miss dear little Wally & Sluggo.] There have been some "warning bells" and "issues" over last few weeks that I can't ignore. He was a fun guy to hang out with, so its not all bad. Having said that, I have to listen to those "warning bells" and move on. I'm actually feeling abit better having written this paragraph. On to some good news ... my friend Larry called last evening and we had a nice, long chat. He finally found a couple to sublet his apartment in Brooklyn, while he lives in his new digs in Manhattan. Getting a good monthly rent from them too ... $1,700. Sweet!

Well, the verdict is in from my dentist, I need three crowns. My dental insurance will only allow me to get one done in 2003 and the other two in early 2004. The insurance only pays half of the cost for each crown and I must pay the other half, which amounts to $200 per crown. Ouch! Sigh! I've worked out a deal with my dentist, who is a good guy, where I pay him $50 out of each paycheck. That'll start on October 15th and end on November 28th. Good news tho ... he says there is no decay or cavities. Whew! Okay ... that aside ... the rest of my news today is all politically related. Hung out briefly with Rob Thursday evening at my place ... out on the front stoop [weather was nice]. He'd brought over some things for me to take up to the Yonkers Ferret Shelter on Saturday.

On Friday evening I went to BIRDLAND jazz club on West 44th Street to see the Andy Summers Trio perform live. Andy was THE POLICE guitarist [one of the best rock bands from early 1980s] and the group was recently inducted into R & R Hall of Fame. I've been happily following Andy's musical career since 1983. The man is one brilliant, talented guitarist. Got to the club around 8:20pm, paid the "fee" at the door, sat at the bar [prime view of small stage] and waved to Dennis as he was finishing the setup of Andy's equipment. Dennis is Andy's road manager and we've been corresponding via email for a number of years. He's a great guy! Ordered a glass of wine and settled in. When Dennis had a free moment he came over, gave me a hug and we chatted for abit. Shortly before 9pm Andy strolled into the club and walked backstage with his guitar case strapped to his back. Before the first set began [sometime after 9pm] the jazz club filled up abit more. Then it was show time! Andy came out followed by Ernest Tibbs [bass player] and Toss Panos [drummer]. Much applause and me shouting BRAVO. Well, someone had too. During the hour long set Andy played songs from his new CD called ... EARTH & SKY. Some of the songs played from the new CD during the set were ... Above The World, Now I'm Free & The Diva Station. Awesome groove! During the first song or two Andy was experiencing some technical difficulties and Dennis worked on the situation while the trio played on. During the course of the set ... inbetween songs ... Andy would chat in his usual dry witty banter. Which I always find amusing. Overall I very much enjoyed the news songs and Andy was in top form. After the set I talked abit with Dennis and he got me Andy's "guitar pick" he used during the set. WooHoo! I also chatted with the bass player, who is a very congenial chap. Andy came out briefly after having some dinner and talked with folk sitting at the bar, plus some fans who wanted autographs. Before going backstage Dennis brought Andy over to me and we had a short, pleasant conversation. Andy also shook my hand and thanked me for coming to his gigs. Told Dennis I'd hangout for abit and watched the first song of second set before heading home. The way the trains were running [or not running correctly] led me later to think I should of stayed for whole second set. Left BIRDLAND jazz club around 11:20pm and didn't get home until after 1am. If the damn trains hadn't been so messed up I'd of been home at midnight. Geez!

On Saturday I headed up to Yonkers to do my volunteer work at ferret shelter. Aliza and her daughter Briana met me at the station, along with their adorable new toy poodle Mitzi. She's only 4 months old, such a lovable little ball of fluff and loves to give kisses. It'd been awhile since I last saw Aliza, so we caught up on gossip. Got to Joanne's place and waltz'd in with Mitzi. Gave hugs to Poppy [Harley was out in dog house since it was a nice, sunny day] and several of the cats. Joanne was with a couple in the shelter who'd come to adopt not one but two ferrets. Yeah! We brought Mitzi in with us to see how she got on with the furkids. Rather amusing to behold as the ferrets didn't know what to make of this little bundle of fur, but she romped around with them. Aliza has two ferrets, so Mitzi is acquainted with furkids. After the couple left with their two furkids the four of us headed back into the kitchen to chat for abit. I'd brought up some things that Rob gave me and it took the three of us to put one of the items together. [smiling] Aliza and Briana left shortly, so Joanne filled me in on ferret news since my last visit. Several newbies, as well as adoptions. Then it was time to do my duties ... such as brush fur, clean ears, fill waterbottles, play with furkids, etc. My favorites [ie: Oliver, Emily, Big Willy & Sweet Pea] had already had their playtime and were sleeping in the cage. My duties included taking care of two different groups before heading into kitchen to have a tea break with Joanne. We talked about ferrets, Cape May and Politics. Afterwards I mopped the floors and put down fresh newspapers for their poop. Another fav of mine ... Fuzzbutt ... stomach area is abit larger than usual and I inquired with Joanne. She says his spleen is enlarged and not much one can do for him medically. Its an occurance that happens to ferrets over 5 years old and Fuzzbutt is over 6. So she keeps him happy and comfortable. I gave him lots of cuddles too plus some extra FerreVita. Poor darling ... he's such a good boy too.

Yesterday I had my annual eye exam and it sounds like I'll be needing those reading glasses in about two years. Dr Nachum says my eye sight for distance is perfect [amen!], but my eye sight for reading et al has deteriated since my last visit 1 1/2 years ago. Sigh! Plus I'm having some troubles with my right eye, which he said dries up [or irritates easily] alot, so gave me drops for that. Oh joy!

ANOTHER WIN FOR MEDIA DEMOCRACY

Take that, Rupert Murdoch! Invoking its authority to "veto" decisions of regulatory agencies, the Senate voted 55 to 40 to overturn FCC moves to loosen controls on media ownership. "What Americans see, hear and read is increasingly controlled by a few people. That is not in the public interest," declared Senator Byron Dorgan, sponsor of the measure that the White House, Senate leaders and the broadcast conglomerates sought to derail. Before the vote, Dorgan accepted petitions from 342,000 American calling on Congress to kill the FCC rules. "Broadcast stations operate on airwaves that are owned by the public ...The FCC seems to have forgotten that, but the American people have NOT forgotten," Dorgan said. Next step: Pressure House Speaker Dennis Hastert to let his chamber follow the Senates lead.

This morning into early afternoon I participated with many other "Friends of Kucinich" [Democrat Running For President In 2004] volunteers out at the big rally for Immigrant Rights in Flushing Meadows [Queens - #7 Subway line]. (This event is part of the Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride rally, which originally started out on the westcoast.) Lots of people came to the Rally and we volunteers were there to hand out leaflets/pamphlets/buttons regarding Kucinich. Check out website below on Kucinich's stance on immigrant rights. A good portion of the responses were good and very encouraging. The weather was not so inspiring ... cool, windy and overcast. [I'm now just finishing my hot lunch & cup of herbal tea. Ahhhhhhhhh]

Well all ... the Kucinich NYC Meetup last evening was great, inspirational and we got alot accomplished. Ran for about 2 hours ... we started at Third & Long Bar but it was way too noicy ... so we moved to the outdoor section of the Barking Dog bar/grill. It was abit cool out last night, but a yummy hot chocolate warmed me up quickly, plus the inspiring speechs of several dedicated, energetic volunteers. We'll be participating in the Immigrant Worker Rally on Saturday out in Queens, to promote the Kucinich campaign with leaf-letting. Peace & Solidarity!

Last evening my landlady's beau finally showed up at 6:30pm to fix the pipes under my bathroom sink. Amen!

Other news ... well yours truly did a silly, absent-minded thing earlier today. I can just hear you all now ... "What the hell did she do now?!?" Well, I'll tell you and I'm not proud of it either. Had to deliver some papers to a partner on the 15th floor at E&Y and when heading back to the elevator realized I had to pee. Naturally I assumed [yep, bad move on my part] the bathrooms were in the same location on 15th, as they are on 28th floor. Wrong!!!! I walked right into the mens bathroom! Elderly, business type gent is coming out of a stall [fully dressed I might add] and sees my surprised look, plus me saying "oh my". I say ... "I'm sooo sorry" and he says "I'm not" with a smile on his face. Well, I turned around, said "excuse me" and left. Went down the hall and found the ladies room and stayed there for 5 minutes or so. I was abit embarressed, to say the least. [Okay .... you all done laughing .... good .... next paragraph is political stuff.]

The Kucinich campaign reached its "third quarter" fundraising goal and the tally comes to a nice $1.54 million. Everyones efforts with fundraising are greatly appreciated. Late Breaking News Regarding My Position Here At E&Y

Found out about 1/2 hour ago that I didn't get another position I was applying for and was upset by my continuing misfortunes. After getting my composure intact ... I called my Administrative Manager and discussed things with her. She confirmed that I'm being kept on at E&Y in the capacity of "floater" and she's got a few "assignments" lined up for me over next month. This is good news and a big relief, cause the job market "outside" sucks!

Ah yes, the joys of living in a small apartment here in NYC. Sigh! Last evening, after getting a manicure/pedicure, I come home and the pipe under my bathroom sink bursts. Run over to my landladys place and her boyfriend comes back to help me out. Able to get the water shut off for pipe leading to bathroom sink and then he removes the corroded pipe et al. Not a pretty sight. They don't have the parts to replace, so job needs to be finished this evening around 6pm. Stay tuned...............

Was suppose to have an internal E&Y position interview this afternoon. Its been postponed to Friday. So far nothing from outside agency on interviews. Frustrating! Yesterday afternoon my Administrative Manager insisted that I attend this "Scorecard Performance Training". This training is set up to help you with your E&Y goals for the next year. I DON'T EVEN KNOW IF I'LL BE WITH THE FIRM AFTER OCTOBER 10TH! Why am I at this training, yah know. I even asked my Admin Mgr that question and her abrasive response was "Go To It Anyway". I'm thinking "what the f--k?!?" So, I went, took the one hour training [waste of time] and wrote up something on my future goals. I handed it in to the supervisor and explained my situation. She's like "why are you here", so I told her what so-so said. The supervisor just shook her head and told me not to bother with "goals". I've been with E&Y since January 2001 and in the last three months I've encountered more difficulties than in all the time I've been here. I've tried to be patient, but thats wearing thin. Yah know? Sigh!!
