QUOTE OF THE DAY ... I'm going out telling the story that I think is thebiggest story of our time: how the right-wing media has become a partisanpropaganda arm of the Republican National Committee. We have anideological press that's interested in the election of Republicans, and amainstream press that's interested in the bottom line. Therefore, we don'thave a vigilant, independent press whose interest is the American people. Bill Moyers, Final PBS "Now" Episode, Dec. 17, 2004

PERSPECTIVE: Social Security a politically risky issue for Ohio Republicans Right now, payroll taxes from workers pay for the benefits of current retirees. The president's plan would turn that around so that some of the money people pay in taxes would be saved for their own retirement. The five Democrats on Ohio's 20-member congressional delegation immediately opposed the plan, saying it would mean fewer benefits to younger workers and cost too much to implement. Reps. Dennis Kucinich and Stephanie Tubbs Jones each are holding town hall meetings in their Cleveland area districts to campaign against the plan, while AARP and the liberal group MoveOn.org both have rolled out TV commercials attacking Bush's plan.

A nuclear reactor with a hole in its head should have triggered a widespread examination and overhaul of the safety program at the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station. Management says it has learned valuable lessons; critics charge that it's business as usual.

U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Cleveland, tried to get FirstEnergy's operating license yanked in February 2003. He says the operators at Davis-Besse "haven't been telling the truth," adding: "It's all about money in the end. It's not about public safety." Kucinich also blasts the NRC, noting that a report issued by the Government Accounting Office last May "shows that the NRC was ill-equipped, ill-informed and far too slow to react. The NRC's reaction to Davis-Besse was inadequate, irresponsible and left the public at grave risk."
