DEPARTMENT OF PEACE
San Francisco Chronicle / December 2005
Mike Abkin, Palo Alto

Dear Editor -- Thank you so much for publishing Robert Koehler's Dec. 8 column about the Department of Peace. The House bill, HR3760, introduced by Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio, now has 62 co-sponsors, including Bay Area Reps. Lynn Woolsey, Barbara Lee, George Miller, Pete Stark, Mike Honda and Sam Farr.

Also, in order to demonstrate to representatives and senators that this legislation has broad community support as being of direct benefit at the local level, city councils and boards of supervisors are being asked to pass resolutions of endorsement. Ten so far have done so, including San Jose and Detroit. The resolution is on the Dec. 12 agenda of the Palo Alto City Council.

The U.S. campaign for a Department of Peace is a national grassroots effort, coordinated by the Peace Alliance (http://www.thepeacealliance.org/), and is active, as of now, in almost 300 congressional districts in every state of the union.
