CAME ACROSS THE NEWS BLIP & COMMENTS BELOW FROM "THE LIQUID LIST" BLOG
[Duchess Note - Reason I find this "news blip" of interest, is that yesterday during a phone call with my Mom, she told me that my cousin Christopher has been called up. Geez, not the kind of news one wants to hear. (sigh!) He served in the first Gulf War and is part of this "Individual Ready Reserve Pool" and gets sent to California on July 5th. Will be seeing him and other family members at my Aunt's BBQ on July 3rd. My cousin is also married with three children and the oldest turns 10 on July 2nd. This is happening to so many other families across the US. Goddamn Bush & his band of insane neocons!!]

No, it's not what you think. Charlie Rangel doesn't have that much pull. But the U.S. Army actually has instituted a mini-draft of former military personnel.

"The Army is preparing to notify about 5,600 retired and discharged soldiers who are not members of the National Guard or Reserve that they will be involuntarily recalled to active duty for possible service in Iraq or Afghanistan, Army officials said Tuesday. Unlike members of the National Guard and Reserve, the individual reservists do not perform regularly scheduled training. Any former enlisted soldier who did not serve at least eight years on active duty is in the Individual Ready Reserve pool, as are all officers who have not resigned their commission. The Army has been reviewing its list of 118,000 eligible individual reservists for several weeks in search of qualified people in certain high-priority skill areas like civil affairs."

Boy, if that isn't an end around! I'm sure those folks will be thrilled to learn they must head out to a combat zone.
