Park Lawn's Great For Anti-War Rally
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
by Juan Gonzalez
Not when the great Pavarotti sang before 250,000 people in 1993. Not when 130,000 turned out for Pope John Paul's open-air Mass in 1995. Not when another quarter-million showed up for a Garth Brooks concert in the park's North Meadow in 1997, nor when when 120,000 came out last fall to hear Dave Matthews. Now along comes Mayor Bloomberg, claiming he can pick and choose which New Yorkers get to use the Great Lawn for a public event. If you're the Metropolitan Opera or the Philharmonic, Bloomberg says, you and your fans are okay. But if you are called United for Peace and Justice, and want to assemble more than 200,000 people in the park to protest the Iraq war on Aug. 29, the eve of the Republican Convention, the Great Lawn is off-limits. Such a huge crowd will damage the grass, Bloomberg says. Forget protesting the carnage of war and an occupation now opposed by most Americans. Save those blades of grass, Mr. Mayor. Such nonsense did not begin with Bloomberg. Political rallies in Central Park have always unnerved our city leaders. Read the complete article: http://www.commondreams.org/views04/0709-11.htm

KUCINICH PLATFORM EFFORTS WIN ADMIRATION
At the Democratic Platform Committee meeting in Miami, Florida Friday night Platform Draft Committee co-chair Rosa De Lauro (D-CT) met with Democratic Progressive Caucus members - a coalition of grassroots Democrats made up of Kucinich, Dean, peace and justice activists who hope to influence the Party platform. Rosa praised Dennis Kucinich and his campaign for pushing progressive issues within the Party. DNC Convention Chair, Alice Huffman, also paid a visit to the Progressive Caucus at their hospitality suite in the Westin Hotel postitioned just down the hall from the Platform Committee meeting. Huffman, who also attended the opening of the Kucinich Convention office in Boston in May, reiterated her admiration for the Kucinich campaign's efforts to encourage more dialogue within the Party and carry on the good fight for the Party's progressive wing.

IRAQ EXIT STRATEGY LANGUAGE ADOPTED TO THE DEMOCRATIC PLATFORM
Under pressure from the Kucinich for President campaign and a broad-based coalition of grassroots Democratic activists, the Democratic Party adopted an amendment to its national platform today declaring its intention to reduce U.S. military presence in Iraq and to push for a greater role for NATO and other nations. "This is significant towards ending the occupation and bringing American troops home," said Kucinich Deputy Campaign Manager Tim Carpenter, one of the lead negotiators for the coalition, united under the name "Progressive Democratic Caucus."

Despite intense efforts by the Kerry campaign to thwart the grassroots activists from introducing strong language regarding the withdrawal of U.S. forces and an end to the occupation, Party leaders eventually agreed to a troop-reduction amendment to avoid a potentially contentious open debate on the floor of the Platform Committee meeting. "Instead of talking about the possibility of sending even more U.S. troops to Iraq, the Party has now publicly committed itself and its nominee to reducing our military presence there," Carpenter said. Kucinich's presidential campaign centered on his opposition to the Iraq war and the occupation. The Ohio Congressman has been calling for an exit strategy since last October and said today, after the platform was adopted, that "the grassroots will continue to push the Democratic Party on this issue until the occupation ends and American soldiers are brought home."

To this end, the Kucinich campaign, in cooperation with other organizations, is planning a week-long series of workshops, forums, and street actions in Boston during the Democratic National Convention to continue pushing for reform within the party and to mobilize opposition to President Bush's war. The two-day Platform Committee meeting at the Westin Resort in Hollywood, Florida ended today. The national convention begins on July 26.
