Hope, Not Fear
BRATTLEBORO REFORMER
Editorial
If there has been one constant theme on the campaign this year, it has been fear. Lacking any constructive ideas, the Republican Party is emphasizing the fear of another terrorist attack. The other day, Vice President Cheney even went as far to say that if Sen. John Kerry were elected president, another 9/11 would likely happen. Fear is an emotion that the GOP has shamelessly and cynically exploited. It's worth remembering a time when our leaders didn't resort to such tactics. Three generations have gone by and Franklin Delano Roosevelt's most famous words -- "We have nothing to fear but fear itself" -- still ring true. His steadiness in the most difficult and turbulent time in American history stands as the greatest example of presidential leadership in the 20th century. If George W. Bush possessed even a fraction of FDR's intelligence, integrity and courage, this nation wouldn't be in the mess it's in now. Read more of this article at:

UPDATE FROM PROGRESSIVE DEMOCRAT ROBERT JERESKI CAMPAIGN IN NYC'S 14TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT AGAINST INCUMBENT CAROLYN MALONEY
At the beginning of this week, we finally had an agreement with a ballot access/election law attorney to represent us. We were to file a suit in Federal Court to ensure that voters have a choice to vote against the Bush Agenda and for common sense policy options on September 14th. Two days later, the attorney backed out. This is the second time that an attorney - identified after much work and many calls - has said they would take the case and then backed out. So I'm sorry to report that we will not be on the ballot this primary election. Robert Jereski is very grateful for all of your support and dedication to raising critical issues that our district, country and world face. We've run a good, issues-based campaign and should all be proud of our efforts and recognize what we've learned from our experience. If you have thoughts about the corruption and other systemic obstacles we encountered (e.g., the Board of Election proceeding which was disrupted by Maloney's Election Team and where Timothy Gay, the Deputy Chief Clerk, made determination about which signatures were valid after having circulated petitions for our opponent), please write a letter to your local paper or one of the major dailies.
We still have 15,000 informative, educational flyers which compare Robert Jereski's platform to the incumbent's record. Our efforts to educate and organize our District into an effective counter-weight against the pro-war, anti-civil liberties, pro-corporate-managed trade, and pro-new nuclear weapons incumbent - Carolyn Maloney - have and will continue to pay off. Please feel free to pick up these flyers for our ON-GOING VOTER OUTREACH.
We would like to mention two important campaigns which will likely be of interest to thoughtful voters: Jessica Flagg, an energetic, creative, and truly Democratic Congressional candidate in next week's Democratic Primary, is looking for volunteers to help flyering in her district. She's running against a Maloneyesque Congressperson, Elliot Engel, and needs our help. Jessica is a proactive, engaged, and common sense Democratic Party member whose efforts to Clean the House! in the North Bronx and Rockland County are being mirrored across our country. If you can drive a stick-shift, Jessica has one for use on Saturday and/or Sunday she has one for you as well as maps of the district and suggestions on where to flyer. She also has informative, issue-based flyers to distribute. Contact her at:

ON-GOING ORGANIZING EFFORTS
We are considering various endeavors to continue to build on the wonderful network of contacts we've established with voters and activists engaged in strong efforts to demand true representation for our district. These include:
1] Preparations to run in two years. Jereski encourages all supporters to join local Democratic Party organizations so that we can better inform our neighbors and fellow Democratic Party members about the issues, undermine the careerist impulse which perverts the civic purpose of many of these clubs, and expand our networks to advance common sense policy (instead of war, waste, and the party machine).
2] Creation of a Maloney Watch website to monitor her performance and pressure her to excel as a representative.
3] Mobilization and organizing in our District to support of local efforts and issues. Help organize in your neighborhood, local transportation hubs (bus stops, subway stops) and ask folks to join our network by distributing Jereski campaign flyers and soon-to-be-produced materials regarding our efforts in buildings, laundromats, local subway stops, etc. Continue to build our network for future MaloneyWatch efforts.
4] Work on mobilization and organizing for various international human rights campaigns, including an international campaign focused on the Global Arms Trade and its impacts on non-combatants, an international campaign focused on the genocidal impacts of major 'development' (mostly resource-extraction) projects affecting indigenous peoples, creation of a web portal for diasporas created by on-going armed conflicts, in order to provide members of the diaspora with continuing education, local language, employment and advocacy opportunities.
Your suggestions regarding these possibilities are much appreciated. We will have a PARTY to CELEBRATE our efforts on the Jereski campaign and the work we can continue to do and facilitate on or near Tuesday, September 21st (details TBD).
Thank you for all your strong efforts to date! We have succeeded in having Maloney (finally, after 12-years) take a stand to support a Universal Single Payer Health Care bill. If history is any guide though, the incumbent will not work to rally colleagues in the House to support this bill but will rather sit back and let it fail. That, and critical upcoming consideration by Congress of approaches to the War in Iraq, the Middle East, two Latin American Free Trade pacts, Pentagon Spending, Education spending, and more, are reasons our continued organizing and vigilance is necessary.
