Addendum: I mentioned that it was "baffling" that Bush "brought up the Dred Scott case, apropos of nothing, and he stumbled even to describe that crucial pro-slavery decision." Many bloggers and e-mailers have notified me that it really is not so baffling, after all. Unbeknownst to me, the Dred Scott case has been seized upon by anti-abortion zealots, who compare it to Roe v. Wade. See:
