ARTISTS AGAINST THE WAR INVITES YOU TO A PREVIEW OF "DISARMING IMAGES" -- 7:00 p.m., WEDNESDAY, JULY 20, 2005 at 147 WOOSTER ST., MANHATTAN
The response of the US Government to September 11, 2001 sparked a global anti-war movement. This grass-roots response is on a scale not seen since the peace and civil rights movements of the 1960s. Recognizing the strength of this inadequately reported phenomenon, NY Artists Against the War initiated an open call for photos and video from anti-war activists and artists. The resulting project represents some of the most creative dissent in the United States. This uncensored, 3 monitor, multifaceted media installation has been edited for a 60-minute time frame.
"Disarming Images" is a traveling exhibition which includes video clips from political documentaries and news reports, signs seen at mass protests, readings and performances, installations by military families and veteran groups, street and web art, billboards and murals, photographs and films -a mix of alternative, cutting edge and traditional media drawn from a variety of sources (DVD to Web QuickTime), from professional to amateur. An easily transportable DVD kit, it contains projection and video material (choreographed for a combination of multiple monitors or full wall projections), as well as image files prepared for printing, all of which may be adapted to the conditions of each venue. Participating institutions will be encouraged to add activities that have taken place in their respective communities.
Artists Against the War will present "Disarming Images" in schools, libraries and public exhibition spaces. We hope to inspire and inform, to attract and affect those who have not yet participated in actions of dissent. In September 2005, the DVD will be shown at the Hillwood Gallery, C.W. Post College, Brookville, LI, beginning its US tour, and at the Casadelle Culture in Rome, Italy, beginning its European tour. These installations will also include 4' x 6' prints of images from the project produced by Philmark Lithographics. The DVD is available upon request. If you are interested in presenting it to your community, please contact us! And we hope you will join us for the preview screening on July 20.

After spending four months in Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan, Gerard Ungerman and Audrey Brohy brought back exclusive footage and interviews that question the "coincidence" of focusing the so-called U.S. "War-on-Terror" in the Middle-East and Central Asia where 3/4 of theworlds remaining oil and natural gas is located. "Powerfully Persuasive" - Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times
