More News Regarding The SAVE THE CHILDREN Climbers Trek Up Mt Kilimanjaro
March 9: Step by measured step, following the steady pace of two professional Tanzanian guides who between them have climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro some 220 times, our own intrepid climbers arrived today at the Lava Tower. At over 14,000 feet, said Bob Seidensticker, the impulse to forge ahead and set a faster pace – even to climb yards ahead and get a group photo – is tempered by the extra energy required so far above sea level. “It’s been a real shift from doing hard workouts at home to here, where we’re learning to treat the altitude seriously and take our time.” The rhythm of the pace – hourly breaks, keeping in a group and lively banter on the easier terrain – has also agreed with Steve Brown. Like all climbers, Steve is consuming – and burning – some 3,000 to 4,000 calories daily and drinking water throughout the day to avoid dehydration. “If we were eating this well at home in the city we’d be gaining weight, but I don’t think anyone up here has to worry about that this week,” he said. On Wednesday, the climbers will reach Arrow Glacier and prepare for Thursday’s most difficult section of the trek. [Duchess Note ... Mt Kilimanjaro is 8 hours ahead of NYC time.]
