More Updates From the "Save The Children" Expedition To Africa & Mt Kilimanjaro
March 3: On their last full day in the field seeing Save the Children’s programs in action, each Kilimanjaro climber banked a reserve of memories and images to take with them when they depart Malawi for Tanzania and Mt. Kilimanjaro, and beyond. For Tom Miller, it was a day to reflect on a visit Tuesday with his sponsored child and his family – a visit that included leaving letters and photos from his own two young sons in Seattle. “I would like your family and my family to get to know each other better,” one letter read. For Shelley Brown, it was meeting more villagers and local leaders who, with Save the Children’s help, are marshalling the traditional strength of their society, a strong sense of community, to bear on HIV/AIDS’ impact in their villages. “Save the Children has helped to leverage this great strength and provides the resources the people need to collaboratively solve problems,” she said. “They are committed to learning what to do and focusing completely on the community; it’s something we can all learn from.”
