Updates From The "Save The Children" Mt Kilimanjaro Climb
March 4: Today was a day of change for our Kilimanjaro climbers – one in which they traded countries (Malawi for Tanzania) and climates and began unpacking for the trek. One thing that did not change was the realization that they had witnessed a tremendous shift in communities in Malawi where Save the Children and villagers are working to blunt HIV/AIDS’ impact in children’s and families’ lives. “HIV/AIDS touches everything there,” said David Robinson. “It’s the common thread that runs through everything in the community. It really brought home to me what a force AIDS is and how it has completely transformed society.” Robinson said he was encouraged to see that more children have access to education at new schools built through Save the Children’s Adopt a Village program. “The silver lining in all of this is that education has become so important for teaching children about health and providing them with messages about HIV/AIDS.” He was moved, too, by the perseverance of those he met. “They are under such stress, but behaving so courageously. They have the ability to deal with adversity in a way I’m not sure I could.”
